To the Rogers School Board and school
administrators:
I believe the new stadium at Rogers High School
should be named in honor of Whitey Smith.
Whitey's 50-plus years of dedication to Mountie
athletics - particularly Mountie football - and
the young people of Rogers is legendary. Please
consider just a few facts:
- Whitey is
a graduate of Rogers High School and played
for the Mounties.
- More than
10 years ago it was estimated that Whitey
and his Chicken Cookin' Crew had raised a
million dollars for activities benefiting
the youth of the community. He has continued
to cook nearly every weekend
from March through October. No doubt that
million dollar figure is well on its way to
$2 million.
- Whitey
received national recognition from the
Sporting Good Manufacturers Association.
Along with his Heroes Award came a check for
$18,000, all of which he donated to the RHS
athletic program.
- Whitey,
long active in the Booster Club, started the
Rogers Quarterback Club. The club operates
the south endzone concessions and the
proceeds fund scholarships, as well as
purchases like the celebratory fireworks and
the tunnel through which the Mounties enter.
There is no one more deserving of the honor
of having the new stadium named for him.
Please vote for the name: Whitey Smith
Stadium.
- Whitey's
generosity does not only encompass students
involved in athletics - Whitey is committed
to Rogers kids, and has raised funds for
scout troops, Project Graduation, and many,
many other groups.
- Whitey and
his wife, Janice have been together since
attending Rogers High School many years ago.
Their children attended and graduated from
Rogers schools, and their grandchildren
attended and graduated from Rogers schools.
- He was the
first player to play in the AHSCA All-Star
Game.
- He was one
of the first inductees into the Mountie Hall
of Fame.
Thank you
